Vitis Awards brings more Gold!

We were thrilled to receive Gold Medals for both the Luna de Miel Chardonnay Reserve 2017 and the Sauvignon Blanc 2018 earlier this week from the Vitis Vinifera Competition.

The Chardonnay is lovely soft and buttery with heaps of citrus and spice on the palate whilst the Sauvvie is everything an easy-drinking fruity Sauvignon Blanc should be.  Selling at R165 and R75 respectively from the tasting room, we’d like to invite you to pop in to taste – and hopefully buy a few bottles!  (There’s a special on in our tasting room on the Sauvignon Blanc till the end of September where you buy 6 bottles but only pay for 5!)

If you can’t get to our tasting room, have a look at our SA Wine Shop on this site under “Wines” and order there for delivery to your door.

Taste from the tank to the bottle with winemaker

Winemaker Jan van Rooyen are getting his ducks (tanks) in a row for the September tutored tasting which takes place on Saturday, 8 September from 10h30 in the tasting room.

“We’re going on a wine journey from the tank, to the barrel and then to the bottle, this month,” he explains whilst keeping his cards close to his chest on which wines exactly will be re-discovered this time!

These events are popular as they are intimate and spending time with a winemaker of Jan’s caliber is a treat for most wine lovers.   The cost is R130 pp which includes a welcome drink, the tasting, a light lunch and coffee.  Bookings are essential at winery@avontuurestate.co.za or +27 21 855-3450 as seats are limited.

Mares & Foals Walk – 30th of August

Although usually relatively inaccessible to the public, Avontuur Estate between Stellenbosch and Somerset West, offers horse lovers one chance annually to view, photograph and in rare cases actually “meet”, some of this thoroughbred stud farm’s equine stars.

On Thursday 30 August from 09h30 till 12h30, 20 persons per day can book for the guided walk with owner Philip Taberer where views of the paddocks, mountains and far-off False Bay is off-set by interaction with the brood mares and their gorgeous new foals.

A high point of the day is the stable visit where Avontuur’s award-winning stallion Oratorio will be “introduced” to the fans.  General Manager Pippa Mickleburgh will be on hand to explain more about the race horse breeding business and answer any questions you have about this fascinating topic.

A leisurely walk back to the tasting room will be followed by a  wine & biltong pairing tasting with winemaker Jan van Rooyen and then a light lunch with a glass of wine.

Although the walk is not strenuous, a reasonable level of fitness is required and it is not suitable for wheelchairs. Kids are welcome but parents must take responsibility for them, as the mares can be very protective of their new babies.

Bookings and pre-payment is essential at +27 21 855-3450 or winery@avontuurestate.co.za . The cost is R350 pp which includes a welcome drink, the guided walk and talk, the tasting and the light lunch. Kids (under 12) are welcome at R250 which includes a welcome drink, the guided walk and talk, a fun tasting and a light lunch.

Shiraz & Venison week ends up with Father’s Day

This year we are so thrilled to be involved in a new activity initiated by the Shiraz Association of South Africa, the inaugural “Venison and Shiraz Week” from Monday 11 June to Sunday 17 June, which also co-incidentally is Father’s Day this year.

We know all our fans love biltong, so it was a no-brainer to come up with a Venison Biltong and Wine Pairing for the week!

We have the Shiraz, our multi award-winning Dominion Royale Shiraz Reserve,  but we needed two more wines to jazz it up with  the stunning venison biltong provided by Afrifoods Butcher and Biltong.

Join us during Shiraz and Venison Week for these pairings:  Pinotage and Kudu Biltong, Cab/Merlot and Springbok Biltong and Dominion Royale and Gemsbok Biltong at only R80 pp.

We have a limited number of the pairings available, so make sure that you book beforehand at winery@avontuurestate.co.za or +27 21 855-3450 if you want to join in – especially on the Father’s Day weekend!

Macarons & Wine Pairing for Mother’s Day

One of our most popular wine and food pairings over the years has been the Macaron and Wine Pairing and just for the week leading up to Mother’s Day, we’re bringing it back!  From 7 – 13 May during opening hours and whilst stock lasts, this pairing is on the “menu” in the tasting room or on the terrace, weather permitting.

Try three of our wines, the Methode Cap Classique Brut, the Luna de Miel Chardonnay Reserve and the Dominion Royale Shiraz Reserve with a strawberry, vanilla and chilli chocolate macaron and let us know what you think!

It’s the perfect stop on your wine route visit with Mom and for only R80 pp, it’s a delicious and affordable treat.

Bookings are essential as there is limited availability.   Contact Ella or Carmen at +27 21 855-3450 or winery@avontuurestate.co.za to book.

Avontuur hosts Cab Franc Challenge 2018 Awards evening

Nine wineries celebrated their achievements in the Cabernet Franc Challenge on Wednesday, 18 April at Avontuur Estate at this year’s Awards ceremony.  Philip Taberer did the honours and handed out the certificates.

Over and above the Top 6, awards were also given for the Top 3 Blends, the Top Vintage wine and a special award for the Best Value Cabernet Franc. The Blends category is a new addition whilst the Best Value is a special award for a great wine at a good price!

“This is the third year of the Challenge and we are lucky that three of the five judges were involved  from the beginning,  which leads to consistency. The judges were myself, Lizette Tolken, Samarie Smith, Anita Streicher-Nel and Tinashe Nyamudoka,” says judging panel convenor Christine Rudman. “Some changes were brought in like the 100 point scoring system which fine tuned the scores much more and obviously we had the new Blend category where Cab Franc had to dominate.”

The Top Six are in alphabetical order:  Anthology Cabernet Franc 2015, Morgenster Cabernet Franc 2015, My Wyn Cabernet Franc 2015, Ondine Cabernet Franc 2014, Rainbow’s End Cabernet Franc Limited Release 2016 and Warwick Cabernet Franc 2015.

The Top Three Blends are Alto Rouge 2016, Kunjani Red Blend 2015 and Morgenster Lourens River Valley 2011.  In the Vintage class Holden Manz wines were top of the list again with their Cabernet Franc Reserve 2013 and Ormonde Ondine Cabernet Franc 2014 richly deserves their special award for the Best Value Wine on show at only R95 per bottle.

“Another interesting aspect is that only 3 of the 50 wines entered were under R100, which shows that winemakers value what they’ve got.  This is not a generic wine category and bargains are basically non-existent.  This year’s Challenge gave a very good overview of the 2015 vintage specifically,  as 26 of the 44 wines entered in the Top 6, were from that vintage,” Christine added.

The judging was done blind and the process and results were audited by Moore Stevens Stellenbosch.

The Top Six Cabernet Francs are exclusively available through Wine of the Month Club as a mixed pack selection, whilst stocks last.

In addition the public can taste the Top Six at the Cabernet Franc Carnival at Avontuur Estate on 19 May at one of three tutored tastings at 11h30, 13h00 and 14h30 respectively.  Only 20 persons per tasting.  The tastings will be presented by Christine Rudman.

Tickets for the Carnival can be bought from www.plankton.mobi at R220 pp or R250 at the gate.  This includes the tastings of 22 of SA’s best Cab Franc producers, a branded glass and a R50 food coupon to spend on the day.   Tickets for the tutored tastings are available at R100 pp on www.plankton.mobi as well and must be pre-booked. New choc and wine pairing takes us into Winter

Although the straight-forward enjoyment of Avontuur Estate’s award-winning wines will always be top of the list at this family-owned wine and stud farm in the Helderberg region of Stellenbosch, the team in the tasting room love to spice up the experience by offering a different wine & taste sensation every now and again.

The launch of our new Chocolate and Wine pairing will therefore once again be a huge hit!

We offer five wines paired with five curated chocolates, each selected to pair perfectly.  The wines are:  Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir/Chardonnay, Pinotage, Cabernet Sauvignon and Dominion Royale Shiraz Reserve.  The chocolates range from milk chocolate, white chocolate and dark chocolate to a choc-dipped pretzel – al with various fillings and flavours!

Not only does the pairing give an overview of our wine range, it is also a relaxing way to enjoy a tasting with quality products in a convivial setting on the terrace if the weather is good, or inside in our cosy tasting room when cooler days arrive.

The pairings are self-guided with assistance from our tasting room staff, and cost R100 pp.  The duration is around 30 minutes and its huge fun to do with other wine loving friends to compare your favourites – and not-so-favourites.

Combine it with our self-guided Farm Walk for R120 pp and it’s a great way to spend some time in the outdoors before sitting down to this indulgent experience.

Although you can arrive without booking, we recommend that you phone or email ahead to ensure everything is in place when you arrive. For groups, it’s essential to book.

For more info or to book contact Ella or Carmen in the tasting room at winery@avontuurestate.co.za or +27 21 855-3450.

New wines released in Tasting Room

A few lucky bubbly fans have already tasted the new MCC Brut Rose but if you are a sparkling wine fan, make sure you pop in to taste and grab a few bottles to take home at only R165 per bottle, till 1 April when our prices go up to reflect the new duties and taxes announced earlier this year.

At the same time, we’re happy to announce that the Cabernet/Merlot 2015 was released in the tasting room last week. As this is our most popular red wine by far, and currently at the excellent price of R84 per bottle, make sure you add some to your collection before the price increases in April.

Watch this space for more wine news – we love sharing our new wines with you.

Share the love this month

Here at Avontuur Estate, we love Valentine’s month and plan to share lots of love with all our visitors this February.

We’re planning a Macaron and MCC pairing during the week of Valentine’s from 12/2 to 16/2 which is available in the tasting room and will be the perfect start to a day of romance.

The Avontuur Estate Restaurant will be open on the 14th for a romantic brunch with bubbly,  a relaxed lunch or dinner overlooking the paddocks and vineyards as the sun sets over Table Mountain.  Bookings at openhand@polka.co.za or +27 21 855-3450.

Continuing the theme of love, our very popular Pinot Noir/Chardonnay is available as this month’s special in the tasting room. A 3-bottle pack costs only R180 (you save R42) and if you can’t get to us on the farm, contact Ella and her team in the tasting room at winery@avontuurestate.co.za and they can arrange a delivery anywhere in South Africa.
