Heritage Month & Braai Day events at Avontuur

September is not only the start of Spring at Avontuur, but we also celebrate South Africa’s official Heritage Day on Saturday, 24 September – and at the same time have fun with the unofficial version called “Braai Day” in the local tongue.

For the whole month we’re offering our exclusive Avontuur-branded “Braai Box” in the tasting room for R500 each.  This will make the perfect gift for any barbecue fan in your family or just as a fun activity instigator.  (Includes:  2 x Bottles of Cabernet/Merlot 2013, an Avontuur apron, Avontuur branded braai tongs, Funky Ouma Shiraz-flavoured braai spice and 2 packets of biltong.)  Please note though that we have limited stock, so it’s first-come first-served.

On Heritage Day itself, over and above our usual tasting room activities, you can also treat yourself to a special Heritage Day platter @ R140 each.  They are packed with liver and snoek paté, cold meats, artisanal cheeses, preserves and biscuits, and can be enjoyed inside or outside on the terrace with a glass of wine or two.

Wine Special for the month:  Buy 2 bottles of Pinot Noir/Chardonnay 2015 and get an extra one free! Total cost:  R140 for the 3 pack.

Special Tastings:  Chocolate & Wine Pairing.  R60 pp.  No bookings required.

Gold Award for popular Cab/Merlot

Our easy-drinking Cabernet Merlot 2013 was once again awarded a Gold Medal for excellence and value-for-money in this local wine competition.   Congratulations were the order of the day and winemaker Jan van Rooyen is thrilled that this very popular wine once again made the cut.

For the thousands of wine drinkers out there who keep stocked up via their local liquor outlet or the farm directly, keep on drinking and keep on supporting us.  We’ll keep on making this wine as good as it can possibly be at a good price!

Mares & Foals Walk returns in August

One of the best times of the year at Avontuur Estate is from August till December when the new foals are born and a few weeks later, are free to run around the paddocks in the care of their mothers.

Horse lovers are invited to book for one of two Farm Walks to learn more about them on Thursday, 18 August or Thursday, 25 August 2016.

The walk will be led by either Michael or Philip Taberer and will visit some of the mares and their offspring in the paddocks.  On arrival at the stables, visitors will meet our two stallions Var and Oratorio and participate in a Q & A session with General Manager and Thoroughbred expert Pippa Mickleburgh.  After a casual walk back to the Winery guests will return to the tasting room for a Wine and Chocolate pairing with a light lunch afterwards.

The cost is R250 pp (Includes the tour, the chocolate & wine pairing and the light lunch).

A limited number of visitors can be accommodated for the two dates and bookings will only be confirmed once payment is received. The walk to the stables is not strenuous and in total will be about an hour, but participants are advised to wear comfy clothing and shoes, and sun protection if necessary.

Chocolate & Wine Pairings: Myth or Magic?

After the local community outcry when we postponed last month’s tutored choc and wine tasting, we’re putting the event in place again on Saturday, 13 August from 10h30-12h00.

So this is your chance to book and make up your own mind about this relatively recent wine tasting fashion.

Does an ice cream and wine pairing really work?  Which wines really stand up to spicy salami and biltong?  And what about everyone’s favourites – wine and chocolates?

On that day we will be tasting some quality chocolates and a selection of Avontuur wines, to allow you to decide for yourself!

After the tasting a light lunch with a glass of wine will be served.  The cost is R100 pp and we have seats for 20 wine lovers only.

Bookings now open at winery@avontuurestate.co.za or +27 21 855-3450.

New vintage of premiere Chardonnay released

The 2015 vintage of Avontuur Estate’s premiere range Luna de Miel Chardonnay Reserve was released in the tasting room on the Estate late last week.

As always the wine is extremely likeable with orange citrus flavours dominating and the small percentage of Viognier blended in, adding that extra bit of complexity.

Chardonnay fans will find much to love in the wine as it has the typical butteriness of a wooded Chardonnay but the minerality and freshness which comes from less, rather than more wood contact.

Retailing at R132 from the tasting room, the 2015 is a sure fire charmer and will please regular and new fans of this long-time favourite from the Helderberg.

Contact the tasting room at winery@avontuurestate.co.za to find out more.

Cab Franc Carnival ticket sales going fast!

After last year’s inaugural Cabernet Franc Carnival which took place in June, it was decided to host the event again this year on Saturday, 21 May from 11h00-17h00, with Avontuur Estate as the main sponsor.

The number of wineries represented has increased to 17 from 13 last year,  which gives attendees even more of an overview of the South African Cab Franc variety, styles  and terroir expression.

Another new addition is the first Cabernet Franc Challenge where we have 32 wines competing, all hoping to be one of the 6 Gold Medal winners.  The six winning wines will be presented by Avontuur winemaker Jan van Rooyen in 3 tutored tasting sessions on the 21st of May, at 11h30, 13h30 and 15h30.  Each session can only host 20 guests and pre-booking is essential.

Like last year, fest goers can buy food from the food trucks or from the Avontuur Estate Restaurant (Reservations essential at openhand@polka.co.za or +27 21 855-4296), live music will entertain the crowds and the wines from each of the 16 wineries will be available for tasting and can be purchased directly from each winery stand.

Ticket sales are now open from Avontuur Estate’s tasting room at R120 for a Carnival ticket (tasting glass and tastings) or R170 per ticket which includes the above and one of the tutored tastings as well.   Contact Ella or Kayla at the tasting room at winery@avontuurestate.co.za or +27 21 855-3450 to book. Only 300 tickets in total are available for the day, so it’s best to pre-book.

NYS Hospitality Lounge now open for viewings

After the success of Avontuur’s first foray into the Emperor’s Palace Select Yearling Sale earlier this month, Pippa and the team from Avontuur is ready for visitors, viewings and general hospitality at the TBA Sales Complex in Germiston.

The National Yearling Sale  offers 8 yearlings, and is a mixed bag with Var’s ruling the roost, although an excellent Oratorio and some exciting new blood in the form of sire Gimmethegreenlight and the in-the-news Jay Peg should tickle the buyers’ fancy.

Ladies first, and with four fillies getting ready for the event Avontuur is especially excited about Lot 422 Kindavar, who is the first foal of the Jet Master mare Without Malice,  an 8 times race winner herself.  “She is tall, a good walker and my pick of the fillies,” Pippa says.

The rest of the Var fillies include Lot 21 Sweet Treat who is correct and athletic and a half-sister to Vous et Var and Lot 163, the first foal from Jeter, who is a real speedball, and closely related to Le Clos, currently proving his class on course.  The last filly (Lot 227)  is by upcoming sire Jay Peg, a tall racy sort who is the close family of Varbration and Captain’s Lullabye.

The only Oratorio on this Sale is Lot 314 Chantyman out of Sea of Calm (USA),  a high quality colt who is a good mover and halfbrother to Balkan  and Princess Katrina.  Pippa commented especially on Lot 398 Keyboogie (Gimmethegreenlight x Valeta) and said he is a very flashy, good looking  colt, who is a half-brother to the exciting 3yo Val et Al and should attract a lot of attention.

Duffield (Lot 452) is a precocious full brother to Twitter (Var x Avian Talk), and is a flashy speed machine.   Hampton Court (Lot 192) by Var is a classy, attractive medium-sized colt who is a nice trainer’s horse out of London Belle, now retired as a brood mare.

“I believe Sweet Treat and Kindavar are outstanding on the fillies side, and the three colts which get my pick are Chantyman, Duffield and Keyboogie. The Avontuur Stud Lounge Hospitality area is open for viewings and socialising from 21 April and we look forward to welcoming all interested parties from then,” Pippa concluded.
