All about wine glasses – Tutored Tasting for July

Winemaker Jan van Rooyen and the tasting room team have had a ball getting together a set of weird and wonderful options to use as “wine glasses” at the July Tutored Tasting session on Saturday, 15 July from 11h00-12h30.

“The idea is that we all taste wine together and then decide which containers work, which don’t and why,” says Jan when explaining the concept.

Guests will taste a few wines with Jan at this intimate event, and will experience everything about wine containers from plastic to glass and clear to dark and large to small.

The cost is R100 pp which includes the tutored tasting and a light lunch with a glass of wine.  Bookings are essential at winery@avontuurestate.co.za or +27 21 855-3450.

We Love Dads at Avontuur!

If you’re still unsure about treating Dad on Sunday, pop in at our tasting room for a friendly and heart-warming reception and a tasting of our award-winning wines!  If you are in the mood for something different, sign up for the new “Wine and Biltong” pairing for only R80 pp.  This should fit right in with everyone’s favourites.

We are open right through the long weekend and gift ideas for Dad include our wonderful exclusive 10 year old Pot-stilled Brandy,  the easy-drinking Red Blend Magnum or the Port-like Liqueur wine Above Royalty.

We look forward to seeing you soon!

Tutored tastings with winemaker start off again

Winemaker Jan van Rooyen and the tasting room team are planning a trio of  “Tutored Tastings” for this Winter.

We kick off on Saturday, 10 June from 11h00-12h30 with a tasting featuring the range of Avontuur wines which won awards at the recent National Wine Challenge.  This will give participants the chance to chat to Jan about wine competitions, their worth, what it means to a winemaker and a winery to win awards and any other questions they’ve always wanted to ask about the “bling” industry.

On Saturday, 8 July and Saturday 12 August, the next sessions are offered. Watch this space for more info about themes and topics.

Each tasting is limited to 20 participants and include the tasting, a light meal and a glass of wine for only R100 pp.  Bookings are essential and can be made in the tasting room with Ella or Marcelle or by emailing winery@avontuurestate.co.za.

We look forward to sharing some valuable info with you this winter, and have fun whilst doing it!

Cab Franc Carnival set for W Cape & Gauteng

After two successful years of the Cabernet Franc Carnival, presented by Avontuur Estate, fans of this unusual varietal will once again get the chance to celebrate their favourite grape on Saturday, 20 May 2017 from 11h00-17h00 at the family-owned wine estate between Stellenbosch and Somerset West.

In addition to the tastings and purchasing of wines directly from the wineries, visitors can book for one of three tutored tastings of the Top 6 wines in the 2017 Cab Franc Challenge, presented by head of the judging panel and Cape Wine Master Christine Rudman.  Tickets costs R75 pp extra and only three sessions of 20 persons each can be accommodated at 11h30, 13h30 and 15h00.

“This is the only chance to taste the Top 6 together as many of these wines are extremely rare and were kept aside especially for the tutored tastings,” says organisor Cobie van Oort from CVO Marketing.

The very popular public “vote” to choose the favourite wine of the day, will once again take place which will give an interesting perspective on the differences between expert and amateur palates.

Participating wineries at the Cape Town event are:   Avontuur Estate, CK Wines, Doolhof  Wine Estate, Edgebaston,  Hannay Wines, Hermanuspietersfontein, Knorhoek Wine Farm, Lynx Wines, My Wyn, Nelson Wine Estate, Oldenburg Vineyards, Ormonde Vineyards, Raats Family Wines, Rainbow’s End Wine Estate, Spookfontein Wines, The Garajeest,  Uva Mira Mountain Vineyards, Vrede en Lust, Warwick Estate, Whalehaven, Zorgvliet Wines.

On Friday, 2 June from 17h00-21h00, winemakers will be at Wanderers Club in Johannesburg to show off their wines.

Participating wineries are:   Avontuur Estate,  Delaire Graff, Edgebaston,   Hermanuspietersfontein,  Lynx Wines,  Mont du Toit Cellar, Nelson Wine Estate, Oldenburg Vineyards, Ormonde Vineyards, Raats Family Wines,  The Garajeest,  Uva Mira Mountain Vineyards, Warwick Estate, Whalehaven and Zorgvliet Wines.

Artisinal confectionary tasting a hit!

The tasting room started with a new confectionary pairing last week and have partnered up with local artisinal producer Basilei, who’s put together a classy selection box of nougat and fudge to pair with 5 Avontuur wines.

At R80 pp this is a stunning treat and something different to do when tasting in the area.

Although bookings aren’t  necessary and the tasting is available whenever the tasting room is open, it is preferable to phone or email ahead just to make sure, especially if you are a group of friends.  Contact Ella or Marcelle at 021 855-3450 or winery@avontuurestate.co.za to organise your pairing experience.

Harvest 2017 more than halfway

With the grape harvest moving along swiftly at the moment after a slightly later start than in 2016, our winemaker Jan van Rooyen and his team are working at top speed to ensure the grapes are brought in safely and in great condition.

The last bit of Viognier 2017 being received at the cellar.

“We finished off the white varietals on Friday with Viognier , and all the Pinotage is in the cellar as well. The Pinot Noir is safely brought in with the Minelli selection already in barrel, said Jan.  “Overall the harvest is excellent with healthy grapes and good volumes in spite of the drought.”
