Jan promises that the journey of discovery will be as exciting as last year’s but he has a few new plans up his sleeve, and this should be a fun and informative event once again!

Tutored Tasting Series 2018 Announced

Avontuur Estate winemaker Jan van Rooyen and the Estate’s Tasting Room team are planning a series of “Tutored Tastings” for the winter months. This is an opportunity for wine lovers to interact with a senior winemaker and learn more about the intricacies of this industry we love.

The series kicks off on Saturday, 12 May from 10h30-12h00 with a tasting attempting to answer the question:  “Can Cabernet Franc age?”  After being awarded a gold medal in the vintage category of the 2018 Cabernet Franc Challenge, the topic seemed apt.  Participants will be privileged to taste some of Avontuur’s vinoteque stock and compare it with currently-on-sale and not-yet-released Cab Francs.

Saturday, 9 June, 14/7, 11/8 and 8/9 are the dates set for the rest of the winter months, with the first few given over to exploring the senses and their impact on wine tasting and enjoyment. Details about the themes will be communicated closer to the time.

Each tasting is limited to 20 participants and includes a welcome drink, the tasting, a light meal and a coffee for only R130 pp.  Bookings are essential and can be made in the tasting room with Ella or Carmen, by phoning the Estate at +27 21 855-3450 or by emailing winery@avontuurestate.co.za.

We look forward to sharing some valuable info with you this winter and have fun whilst doing it!

Cab Franc Carnival at Avontuur set for 19 May

The 2018 Cabernet Franc Carnival will once again bring one of the most interesting wine varietals to an adoring public.

On Saturday, 19 May 2018, the Carnival takes place at scenic Avontuur Estate between Stellenbosch and Somerset West.

Visitors can taste and buy the wines directly from the wineries.

The interactive tutored tastings of the 2018 Cab Franc Challenge Top 6 wines is an integral part of the Carnival and is often the only place to taste these winning wines due to small volumes produced.  Tickets costs R100 pp extra and a limited number of seats per session is available.

The very popular public “vote” to choose the favourite wine of the day, will again take place which gives an interesting perspective on the differences between expert and amateur palates.

The participating wineries are: Avontuur Estate, Chamonix, Delaire Graff, Druk My Niet Wine Estate, Hermanuspietersfontein Wines, Kunjani Wines, Morgenster Wine and Olive Estate,  My Wyn, Onderkloof Wine Estate, Oldenburg Vineyards, Ormonde Vineyards, Raats Family Wines, Rainbow’s End Wine Estate, Snow Mountain Wines – James McKenzie,  Spookfontein Wines, The Garajeest,  Vrede en Lust, Whalehaven, Zevenwacht.

Tickets are R220 pp which includes the tastings, a R50 discount coupon to spend on food and a tasting glass.  Tickets from   www.plankton.mobi .  If bought at the event, tickets are R250 each.

New choc and wine pairing takes us into Winter

Although the straight-forward enjoyment of Avontuur Estate’s award-winning wines will always be top of the list at this family-owned wine and stud farm in the Helderberg region of Stellenbosch, the team in the tasting room love to spice up the experience by offering a different wine & taste sensation every now and again.

The launch of our new Chocolate and Wine pairing will therefore once again be a huge hit!

We offer five wines paired with five curated chocolates, each selected to pair perfectly.  The wines are:  Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir/Chardonnay, Pinotage, Cabernet Sauvignon and Dominion Royale Shiraz Reserve.  The chocolates range from milk chocolate, white chocolate and dark chocolate to a choc-dipped pretzel – al with various fillings and flavours!

Not only does the pairing give an overview of our wine range, it is also a relaxing way to enjoy a tasting with quality products in a convivial setting on the terrace if the weather is good, or inside in our cosy tasting room when cooler days arrive.

The pairings are self-guided with assistance from our tasting room staff, and cost R100 pp.  The duration is around 30 minutes and its huge fun to do with other wine loving friends to compare your favourites – and not-so-favourites.

Combine it with our self-guided Farm Walk for R120 pp and it’s a great way to spend some time in the outdoors before sitting down to this indulgent experience.

Although you can arrive without booking, we recommend that you phone or email ahead to ensure everything is in place when you arrive. For groups, it’s essential to book.

For more info or to book contact Ella or Carmen in the tasting room at winery@avontuurestate.co.za or +27 21 855-3450.

Platter’s 2018 ratings good news for Avontuur

With four 4-star ratings (up from last year’s two),  the cellar and vineyard team at Avontuur Estate were celebrating this week as the information contained in the new jalapeno red Platter’s 2018 became known.

The new additions were 4 stars for the 2015 Sarabande Sauvignon Blanc Reserve and the Cabernet Sauvignon 2013, adding to its previous awards,  with the Dominion Royale Shiraz Reserve and a new 10 year old pot-stilled brandy keeping their 4 star rating.

In addition the Pinotage 2014 and Pinot Noir/Chardonnay 2016 improved on their results which brings the wines with higher scores than in the 2017 guide, up to four.

“We are happy with the results and especially the improvements, and look forward to seeing further increased scores as our work in the vineyards and cellar are translated into reality in the bottle,” says winemaker Jan van Rooyen.

“A big thank you to owners Michael and Philip Taberer as well as Pippa Mickleburgh and her vineyard team for all the support and hard work over the last few years.  Now we look forward to sharing these wines with all our fans out there.  We hope to see you in the tasting room at the Farm this summer,” he concluded.
