Tasting room special for July

In honour of our inspiring connoisseur Cobie we have decided to offer her favourite red wine on special.

The Baccarat was her “go to” red. Just before the release of the new vintage (2014) we tasted with Cobie to put the tasting note together and in her words, “this wine is superb!” Lovely red plum and light herbal notes with a smooth finish. Enjoy with red meat dishes, roast veggies, cheese boards or your favourite sundown snacks like biltong and nuts. Her experienced and discerning palate always gave us great confidence and guidance so be assured you won’t go wrong with this excellent wine.

We are open for wine sales from Monday to Thursday 09h00-17h00.

New Baccarat Released

After a long wait, Avontuur was happy to present the new Baccarat 2014 to wine lovers early in June.  The ninth release of this family-owned Stellenbosch Estate’s Bordeaux-style red blend was quickly snapped up by on-line shoppers and local visitors to the Estate’s tasting room, with positive comments received from fans.

The final decision about the specific components of the blend is always up to the winemaker and in this case Jan van Rooyen had some interesting facts to share; “The current 2014 vintage is Merlot driven at 49% (and two previous ones, from 2010 and 2009 were also, respectively 56% and 51%). Interestingly, the first 4 were all Cab Sauv driven: 2000 – 60%; 2001 – 58%; 2004 – 70% and 2005 – 50%. Two others were Cab Franc driven: 2008 – 57% and 2012 – 39%”

With the addition of Pinot Verdot for the second time, the blend is becoming ever more complex and this Merlot-driven vintage is packed with red fruit, wonderful ripe plum, a soft whiff of leather and cigar box from 24 months in french oak and some minerality on the nose and palate.

Jan feels that the wine will drink optimally until 2024 and as only 7800 bottles were produced it’s a good idea to grab a case or two to drink now and keep.  Father’s Day on Sunday will also be a perfect opportunity to treat yourself or Dad with this Avontuur stalwart, especially paired with a robust red meat dish.

The Estate Tasting Room and the online shop at both offer a discounted 20% off price point until the end of June, which makes it easier to stock up on this well-balanced and made-to-age South African red. The normal price is R320 per bottle, but if you buy a case of 6, the price with the discount is R1536.00, a saving of nearly R400.

The Tasting Room is open according to Level 3 restrictions at the moment ie Monday to Thursday from 09h00-17h00, only for sales with no tastings allowed. (The Estate is closed on the public holiday on 16 June.)

Avontuur Wine now available in the EU

Avontuur wine fans will be happy to hear that their favourite tipple is now on order from our new distributor, Halewijn, based in Belgium.  More about Halewijn de Lie below and how to taste and order!

If your surname is “Halewijn”, which means “fetch the wine” in Dutch,  you would probably have no other option but to enter the wine industry.  And if your granny also sold wine and gin,  there is just no way out!

Halewijn De Lie found that out when he started selling Cape Wines for an Antwerp-based importer in 1982.  Following from those days,in 1996 he started his own business based in the historic “Boerenhuis” which belonged to his ancestors.  This is situated in Berendrecht (Antwerpen) and dates from 1776. (Pic featured).

He travels to South Africa at least once per year to discover new wines and to visit existing suppliers.  In October last year he was introduced to the wines of Avontuur Estate, situated between Stellenbosch and Somerset West in the spectacular Cape Winelands.

According to Halewijn,  the Avontuur wines are mainly an “experience”, which is the result of a knowledge of wine making, hard work, care and climate. “These are balanced wines, white, rosé and red, which can safely be counted among the top of the South African wines.  Definitely worth to go on adventure and taste,” he said.

Visit  to view the price list and range and order some Avontuur wines.  Halewijn can be contacted at  to arrange for a tasting of Avontuur wines on site and  on-line orders are welcome.  Deliveries can be made anywhere  in Belgium or to other EU countries.

Avontuur Estate winemaker Jan van Rooyen was thrilled to announce the release of the 2018 vintage of this iconic wine on the Avontuur wine list.  “This is a Chardonnay for the Chardonnay lover,” he says.  “The wine has nuances of orange peel and ginger on the nose and it’s a full-bodied style with complexity from a tiny bit of Viognier and 80% new French oak barrel fermentation and aging. “
